This year’s Annual Conference will be addressed by Chris Chapman, known to many of us from his years as Spirituality Adviser for the Diocese of Southwark, and a member of SPIDIR’S Committee.
He now works on an independent basis as spiritual director, retreat leader, teacher and writer.
The AGM will start promptly at 10.30am, with the Annual Address following at 11.30am.
Can anything good come out of Nazareth?
Unconscious bias and the task of spiritual direction
There were many who could neither see, nor welcome who Jesus was because their received attitudes and beliefs did not allow a prophet to be a carpenter’s son or come from a town like Nazareth.
What unconscious bias do we bring to the work of the spiritual direction? How do we work with our negative attitudes as we become aware of them so that they do not get in the way of the Spirit’s work?
How do we accompany people through periods when their own received beliefs and attitudes begin to crumble in the face of their experience?
What groups are largely absent from the work of spiritual direction, retreats and prayer workshops? Why is this so? What can be done?
